How to successfully build a following on Medium.
It’s not hard. But it does require consistency.
Yesterday, Peter Murphy became my 1,000th follower.

While I celebrate that milestone, I know it could have happened a lot sooner if I had just put in the work.
I would love to be one of those Medium authors that makes $10,000 per month on a single article.
But my monthly checks from Medium barely cover a cup of coffee. It is entirely discouraging.
One time, a long time ago, I read an article by a successful Medium author who recommended three very simple steps:
- Follow 100 Medium authors every day
- Interact with their content (comment, share, highlight, etc.)
- Write one new Medium article every day.
I was going along with him until I got to the last bullet point.
One article per day? In addition to my full time job? Good grief.
But like a good student, I diligently started on the first bullet point.
