I paid $75,000 for my advanced degrees. But (as I’ve written before) those degrees only taught me how to get an advanced degree.

And that was a steal, compared to many of the alternatives out there.

I did 98% of my coursework online. It was pure hell, but it taught me discipline in writing, organizing my work, and navigating the landscape of academic studies.

But I am a lifelong, voracious learner and my academic journey spanned about 6 years.

That’s only about 1/7th of my life here on Earth.

I realized it’s up to me to build the curriculum of my own life.

And now I collect new skills like athletes collect trophies.

Here are ten ways you can grow your own education in ways that will pay off for a lifetime:

  1. Take responsibility for your own learning. No one else is going to do it for you. You are the only limit to what you can learn in this lifetime. Skill building will serve you well, no matter what you’re doing.
  2. Get familiar your own interests. What excites you? Is it science? Sociology? Tattoo art? The stockmarket? What do you find yourself returning to, again and again?
